7 Ways To Overcome Self-Doubt

October 8, 2013 in Affirmations, Inspiration, Intuition, Meditation by Jill

Everyone has experienced self-doubt from time-to-time, even successful business owners and elite athletes. If self-doubt is not dealt with it can leave you sabotaging your own success, feeling powerless and even filling you with regret.

This is one emotional negative mind set you will want to triumph. Here are 7 tips to defeat self-doubt.

1. Be aware of your self-doubt

Acknowledging you are lacking in confidence is a great strength to possess. Growth will come by being aware of whatever you are feeling. By denying your self-doubt you are only covering it up with a blanket. It will then fester like rotten mould until one day the smell is so putrid that it is too overwhelming to deal with. So, say hi to your self-doubt, and/or tell someone you trust that you feel this way.

2. Use affirmations

Affirmations are a fantastic tool in turning negative self-talk into a positive mind set. You keep repeating your affirmation until it warms your body up with love. In the case of self-doubt, I use a personal favourite of mine “I believe in you” until I truly believe I can do it. In my deepest core I do believe in me, but sometimes I need the affirmation to remind me of my truth. Another affirmation you could use is “I am good enough”.

3. Surround yourself with positive quotes and music

I l-o-v-e uplifting quotes! Wherever I live there are always positive quotes stuck on the fridge, toilet door, and walls. Why do I love them? They keep inspiring me to live a life of love and happiness. I change them from time to time, or relocate them to keep things fresh.

I also have an “Inspirational” playlist on my iPod, which I crank up to lift me up. These tools keep my self-doubt and negative self-talk to a minimum, and pick me up instantly when they creep back in. There is something powerful about passionately singing along to I am Woman by Helen Reddy, Hero by Mariah Carey or I Believe I can Fly by R. Kelly. You know what I am off to do now yeah? …

4. Be with your cheerleaders

Surround yourself with your fans, the people who support and love you. Allow their positive energies to uplift you, and remind you of your own greatness. Keep away from people who put you down, tell you that you can’t do it or anyone who doesn’t get you. You are awesome, and your fans believe in you too, so stick with them.

5. Meditation

This is a great tool to connect you with your higher power, your higher self, intuition, the universe, god or whatever word you choose to use. Self-doubt is on the other spectrum to love, but by connecting with your spirit, infinite love will fill you up. It will also give you the self-belief, courage and strength to persue your passions and desires.

Find a quiet place, and position yourself comfortably (sitting, lying or standing is fine). Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, filling your lungs, and emptying them completely. Now, feel the rise and fall of your abdomen. Allow your thoughts to be present, but don’t get attached to them, just allow them to float by. If you get distracted, come back to feeling your abdomen. You can also place a hand over you tummy too. Do this for five minutes. You will feel more calm and relaxed, and love will radiate through your cells, not negative self-talk.

6. Visualisation

Another goodie is visualisation. Get your creative juices out ladies and gents, because here is the moment you get to be the star of your own show!

Close your eyes and let your imagination run wild. See yourself standing on a stage, and now create. What is it you want to see?

Ok, so in my case right now, my self-doubt is about writing, and creating an online business. Here goes, I see myself writing a great article that inspires other people, including myself, to get over self-doubt. I see myself realising I do have wisdom to create an article about overcoming self-doubt, I do have the power of words to share this message and I see myself happy and satisfied that my readers and I have grown today. As I do in real life, I see myself do a success dance whoop whoop – maybe one day if I do video blogs I will show it to you.

7. Gain some perspective and see the bigger picture

You are not alone. At some point, everyone has felt and dealt with self-doubt, even those who seem confident. No one is out to sabotage you, only yourself with your negative self-talk. You are not special or unique by feeling this way, but you are courageous by following through with your dreams. While striving towards your goals remember there is no such thing as a mistake, they are only lessons, and with each lesson comes growth.
